"RARE" Model 1918 US WWI Trench Periscope

Wollensack Opt.

The U.S. Model 1918 trench periscope was used to spot the enemy and defensive positions from a distance without putting the user in peril. The long shaft of the scope allowed for it to be raised over a trench wall while the soldier holding it could stay safely under the rim of the trench, avoiding machine gun and rifle fire. The scopes were also used to aid in determining the range of an enemy to assist with artillery bombardments and sniper fire. manufactured by the Wollensak Optical Company of Rochester, New York. This periscope with serial number 1277 retained the large majority of its original green enameled finish. The periscope is all complete with retractable handle operating smoothly. The original leather casing is also in good condition
