The M40 series of mask was designed as a replacement for the U.S. military's long outdated and terribly designed M17 series mask. The M40 series utilizes the common 40mm standard NATO threaded filters commonly found on most masks, alleviating the dangers associated with removing your mask during filter change. The first M40 mask featured a black rubber nose cone. The newer and improved M40A1 series mask's nose cone is green and of a softer rubber material. The M40A1 mask is also made of a softer silicon rubber compound providing more comfort to the user during extended use. The M40A1 is equipped with an internal and external drinking hose with canteen connector that can also be attached to today's Camelbak water systems.
